Technical Q&A

What are the power requisites?
  • 12V, required current: 0.3A (very low power consumption)
  • Can work with a battery using a D-Tap to XLR adapter
  • POE is not directly supported, as the Ethernet port on RigFX does not has POE. However, we can provide an optional adapter cable to split POE Ethernet into XLR power with the correct voltage
Which software application is required for initial system configuration?
  • Connect to the RigFX web application via your network to configure the system, set encoder zeros, and enter physical rig measurements
  • To enhance setup quality, we recommend using:
  • CalibFX Lens for lens files
  • CalibFX Lineup for the two transforms that finalize the system setup:
    • Studio offset: position of the system within the studio
    • Sensor offset: position of the camera mounted on the rig
  • CalibFX is not mandatory, but it is highly recommended as it saves time and improves precision.
  • Fully integrated with ClassX
How to synchronize RigFX?
  • Synchronization via tri-level or blackburst genlock signal on BNC
  • Synchronization is also possible through timecode

if both timecode and genlock are provided simultaneously, they must come from the same clock source

  • The timecode port can also be used to jam-sync the device: plug in the timecode signal for around 10 seconds, RigFX detects it and updates its internal clock. You can then remove the physical timecode cable, and as long as RigFX remains genlocked, the timecode will stay accurate
What protocols are supported?
  • FreeD D1 over UDP via Ethernet
  • OpenTrackIO over UDP via Ethernet
  • Embedded web application (web server) for remote control and monitoring of the device state
  • All communications run over Ethernet
  • Wi-Fi is not recommended, but it is possible through a Wi-Fi router as part of the customer’s network infrastructure
Which lenses are compatible with RigFX?
  • Using a lens cable:

    • Broadcast lenses: Canon / Fujinon / Angenieux
    • Follow focus systems (remote-controlled cinema lenses): Preston and CMotion/ARRI
    • Smart lenses (/i protocol): Cooke / Zeiss / Fujinon (note: no distortion data embedded in /i1)
  • Using RigFX external encoders:

    • We can provide external encoders for zoom and focus
  • Network-based lens data support:

  • FreeD lens data (for PTZ systems)
  • OpenLensIO from OpenTrackIO-compatible PTZ systems (e.g. Sony FR7)
  • CanonCV (Canon lens data through Canon hardware)
Is the connection with the lens Plug & Play?
  • Yes, the connection is plug-and-play when using a cable
  • For external encoders, min/max calibration of the lens ring is required (does not work with endless rotation rings)
  • If using FreeD output, a lens file associated with the lens data is required. CalibFX Lens can be used for this
  • The lens file can either be loaded into the ClassX system or directly into RigFX when outputting OpenTrackIO. CalibFX lens software provide ClassX lensfile and RigFX lensfile
How much time is needed for the setup?
  • Cartoni e-Jibo with a e-Head: from Pelicase to fully mounted setup, around 30 minutes with two operators
  • Lens calibration from scratch: approximately 1 hour
  • If using PTZ with OpenTrackIO or CanonCV, no lens calibration is required since the lens data is already embedded: 0 minutes
  • Lineup process: approximately 5 minutes, even faster with direct ClassX integration
  • Overall setup time depends on the configuration, but if the lens has already been calibrated , or if embedded lens data is available , mounting the jib and completing the lineup can make the system operational in around 45 minutes
What is the final camera tracking accuracy?
  • Precision is extremely high. With Cartoni mechanical systems, we achieve:
  • Better than 0.1 mm positional precision
  • Better than 0.001° angular precision
  • The system provides stable, repeatable measurements with no visible jitter
  • Final accuracy mainly depends on the care taken during setup: accurate zeroing or precise physical measurements, etc
  • CalibFX Lineup helps maximize the achievable accuracy !
